We love fall!

Greetings from the Thompsons,
Well, we are back after taking the summer off and most of fall, but we decided that we needed to get back into updating this blog even if it is every few months now. We post many of our pictures on facebook so the blog has been left untouched!

Our summer was spent mostly with trips to the beach, hanging out on the deck, and weekend getaways to the Trinity Village property. We also took a road trip up to Oregon and a visit to the Sherrards over in Graeagle. The kids are definitely better travelers in the car and it really allowed us to venture out during the warm summer months. In October, we took a week long trip down to Southern California and caught up with lots of family and friends. We had an amazing time and saw so much. We did Disney in a day (crazy), hit the zoo, and spent much time at the beach. We can't wait to go back!!

For Halloween this year, Reece was a cow and Alauna was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Both of the kids enjoyed handing candy out more than actually receiving it. Unfortunately, Reece did learn the word "candy" and it has stuck ever since.

Alauna Update:
Alauna continues to go to preschool 4 days a week and it has really paid off. She has her letters down and gets the concept that the letters make sounds. It's been a very exciting past few months. She is going to be very prepared next year in kindergarten! She loves coloring and enjoys doing projects. She pretty much doesn't take naps anymore and quietly waits until rest time is over.
After trips to the doctor for a never-ending cough, we are coming to terms that Alauna may have cold- induced asthma. Each time she gets a cold it goes directly to a cough and lingers for weeks. It's been very frustrating trying out different medications and hopefully we will get it right soon!

Reece Update:
Oh Reece.... He's just a ball of energy and enjoys being active all day long. It is probably the reason he sleeps so well! Reece talks a bunch and calls his sister "Awanna". He loves tractors, trains, and cars. We've seen him carry around Alauna's baby dolls and feed them, but he ends his "baby time" with them being heaved across the room. He still loves being outside and absolutely adores going to the beach. He has amazed us doing puzzles and seems to be very coordinated. Reece is still on the smaller end for his age, but he's catching up. With all his energy he burns, he also constantly eats and if it isn't available, he'll go looking for food in the pantry! He has become very independent and has entered those lovely "two's..."I do it!" and "No mama".

Cody and Amber Update:
With the days getting shorter and the rainy weather picking up, it has really kept us in running check. We both pretty much go when we have a chance during the day and can't count on tomorrow! We have been running in races about once a month. Cody did a 1/2 marathon (13.1mi) down at the Humboldt Marathon a month ago. He did very well and has continued keeping his weekly mileage up for future races. Amber has been sticking to the 5ks and under-mostly because the training is too much of a time commitment. Next week is the Turkey Trot 5k on Thanksgiving. It should be good!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
We miss you and hope to catch up in the coming months!

May is going...going...almost gone!

Wow, it's been over a month since we updated our blog!! We've kept quite busy with lots of weekend plans. We bought a tent trailer about a month ago which has 2 full-sized beds and a twin, plus a fridge, sink, and stove. We took it up to the Jones' Trinity Village property and tried it out a few weeks ago! We all slept great and are excited to have a comfortable place to sleep when we camp.
Last weekend, we headed to Graeagle (about 20 min south of Quincy) for an extended weekend with Grandma 'Jean to visit Tom, Patsy, and Kelsey. The kids had a great time fishing, wading in the lakes (too cold for swimming), and hiking. Cody's aunt and uncle hooked us up with a great 3 bedroom vacation home that was close to everything! We had an awesome visit!
It has been a great May for us and we are excited that summer is practically here!! Bring on the camping, weekends at the Trinity River, and a few roadtrips! The Thompsons are ready...

Alauna Update:
Alauna caught two fish over Memorial Weekend with help from Cousin Kelsey. She also had a blast riding around in Uncle Tom's golf cart and really loved the hikes. Alauna amazed us with her willingness to try new foods...she actually liked shrimp, calamari, and trout! She was pretty much the only one of us to get into the icy cold lakes last weekend and was overjoyed by the snow that was still on the mountains!
Next week, Alauna graduates from her first year of preschool and will continue to go two days a week through the summer. In the fall, she will attend the same school, but go four half-days.

Reece Update:
Reece has enjoyed our past two weekends mostly because the majority of our time has been spent outside. He loves running around outdoors and is constantly digging around in the dirt. During our trip, we had to lather the poor guy up with a thick layer of super-sensitive sunscreen because we found that he gets red patches on his face from any chemical based or fragranced sunscreen. The stuff didn't blend in at all, but he was free of any rashes or sunburns!
Reece is practically saying a new word each day, but the amazing thing is just how much he actually understands. Reece can point to most of his body parts and totally understands when we are talking to him (if he wants to listen, that is...) He is still moving at one quick speed during the day and loves playing with his cars and riding on his little trike.

Amber and Cody Update:
We can't stop running...The bug has caught us both and we are not only running 3-4 days a week, we are also entering local races as well. We completed the Avenue of the Giants 10k on May 3rd. Cody got 2nd overall! Amber was just happy to run the entire time and with a pace of under 10 minute miles! The next race we did was the Eureka Waterfront on May 17th, where Cody ran the 4.1 in 30:54 (4th place overall). Amber did the 2 mile in 17:52. We started a running club that meets at our house every Wednesday and are surrounded by runners in our neighborhood! Next month, Amber is signed up for the Atalanta's Victory Women's run which is 5 miles so hopefully the training will pay off! Cody is anticipating a 6 mile race in about a month. The running continues...

Wind is in the air...

It is so hard to believe that we are in April! It's been over a month since this blog has been updated. We both tend to post things on facebook faster, but still have a small group following the blog so we're trying to get to it too!

With spring officially here, we've been planting lots of things in our garden over the past few weeks. We grew many things from seeds this year, but the late frost made it difficult to put things into the ground. Over the weekend, we finally got around to getting the last of the peas and beans outside. Hopefully, we'll have a great garden for summer with zukes, tomatoes, beans, peas, sunflowers, and peppers!

Over the weekend, we celebrated Easter with the Jamison's on Saturday with their Annual Egg Hunt and BBQ. The kids had a wonderful time collecting eggs with their friends. Reece and another little buddy had smaller kid area to hunt that was seperate from the bigger kids. Alauna was thrilled with the egg that had a whole dollar in it (and not so excited about the bottle cap...those silly dads!).

This weekend, Alauna and mom are heading down to Sacramento, with Gram and Gramps, to meet up with Amber's aunt from Switzerland. Cody decided to stay back with Reece so they can have some bonding time as well. It should be fun for us all!

Alauna Update:

Alauna is finally getting into writing and loves to color. She enjoys going to school and has made a lot of really nice friends. She has been learning sign language and has been showing off some of the letters she knows. Alauna talks all the time and has lots to tell us. She is quite the storyteller and remembers everything! We have our ups and downs with her especially when it comes to her clothing- Alauna is already picky about what she wears, but we're compromising! She's been really into riding her bike and rode two miles on the Hammond Trail a few weekends ago.

Reece Update:

Our latest news with Reece is his boom in vocabulary. He definitely figured out the important and useful words first. He proudly told us over the weekend, "Movie...Baby". Which meant that he wanted to watch a Baby Einstein Movie. It was pretty funny and we are so thrilled that we produced yet another commericialized baby (One of Alauna's first words was "Melmo")....too funny! Reece is still a climber, a runner, and a jumper. He leaps down steps and loves to jump off of things. Scary!! There is a softer side to the little guy as he has taken to Alauna's dolls. He feeds them bottles, carries them around, and loves to push the babies around in the stroller too. Reece is also an excellent cook at his little kitchen.

Cody and Amber Update:

We are both running 3-4 days a week and excited about some upcoming races. We ran the Foggy Bottoms Milk Run at the beginning of March. Cody did excellent in the 4.1 mile race and Amber finished the 2 miler with her friend, Gretchen. The next run is the Avenue of the Giants which is a 10k. The weather has been cooperating and we have some great places to run close by the house. Cody is still playing basketball in the city league and the team was doing so well that they bumped them up a division. We are trying to get our daily fix of exercise and looking forward to more good weather!

Back on the Mainland...

Well, we are back from our trip and finally adjusted to the 2 hour difference. It is truly amazing how only a few hours time change can really alter the the kiddos' schedules. Both kids were going to bed after 9:30 pm for most of this past week and they are sleeping in too!

The great thing about our trip to Maui was that the kids did great on the flights and the condo we stayed at was perfect for our family. We stayed at the Napili Point Resort with a wonderful view of the ocean and a downstairs unit so the kids had a little backyard! Reece immediately loved our new place because he could go in and out as he pleased. The beach was right around the corner from our place so it really only took us a few minutes to get there. We could head to the pool from our slider and snorkel in the cove right below our condo. The other amazing thing about Hawaii during this time of the year are the whales. They are breaching right off of the coast and we could see them at the beach, from our condo, and pretty much along the entire west side of Maui. We spent most days at the beach, but did go up to the Haleakala Crater, the Maui Ocean Center, and walked around Lahaina. We were truly spoiled by our vacation and would love to go back to Napili soon!

Alauna Update:
Our daughter was out of preschool for 10 days, but was back at the routine this week. Her friend, Little Cody from next door, also started this past week so now she has another close friend at her school.

Alauna was an easy traveler with her time being occupied by Barbie movies, Barbie coloring books, Barbies, and food! She absolutely loved playing in the ocean and jumping into the waves. She also had a great time at the Ocean Center and carried her fish I.D card throughout the entire place matching the fish. She spent each day playing Barbies with Grandma and swimming with her Daddy.

Reece Update:
Reece was a busy little bee on our trip. Thankfully we were upgraded to economy plus on the way over so there was a ton of leg room for Reece to jump around in. We weren't so lucky on the way home! He watched his favorite Baby Einstein movies on the plane and made friends with the people and kids sitting behind us.
Once we arrived, he had a blast just playing in the sand. We had a scare on the first day at the beach when he was knocked down by a small wave. He managed to roll over in the water and for that second he was under, his little eyes were open and looking up through the water. Very scary, so he stayed in our arms after that. He wasn't afraid, but we were!

Amber and Cody update:
We've been keeping up on running as best we can. We ran up to Kapalua one morning and are trying to continue to go a few days a week. Cody received a GPS Forerunner for his birthday which monitors how fast he is going, distance, and heart-rate. It's a great gadget for a runner! We're thinking about doing Foggy Bottoms in about a week. The weather has been pretty rainy so we've had to get out during breaks, but we are both committed to continue running!!

Birthdays, Hawaii, and Humboldt Life

Greetings to you all! Time is really getting away from us. We were just looking at the date of the last blog entry and realized it's already been more than a month. We had a really nice January which is helping to get us through the winter quickly! Actually, we are in the middle of a big drought. Our rainfall for Humboldt is 67% of normal and we should be hoping for more rain, but are totally enjoying less!
On January 31st, we pulled off an outdoor 4th birthday party for Alauna! Complete with our neighbor's bounce house, the kids spent the afternoon outside in our yard and on the deck. It was really nice! She had 10 of her friends over and we had pizza party. Alauna had a wonderful time and thoughtfully looked at every present she opened.
Besides that, we are headed to Maui in about a week! We are all looking forward to some much needed vacation together and we're tagging along with grandparents so more relaxing time for us! We are staying in Napili which we both have a soft heart for since it was where we honeymooned. It has been kinda crazy going through the drawers and closets looking for sandals, swimsuits, and sunscreen in February! Alauna is an excellent traveler and we have high hopes for Reece since he can now be easily entertained with Baby Einstein videos, books, and lots of snacks!!

Alauna Update:
Our little girl turned 4 on January 31st and she is growing like a weed! We have her 4 year check up this week and it will be very interesting to see where she is at. She does have to get 2 shots which won't be fun to withness! Alauna is still a huge talker. She tells stories all the time and has an amazing imagination. She is also coming along with writing her name and letters. We've been working with her several times a week and it is looking so much better. Alauna loves riding her bike around in the front and enjoys playing with the kids in the neighborhood. Her absolute favorite toys are Diamond Castle Barbies. One of them sings and she sings right along with her!

Reece Update:
Reece's favorite times of the day are mealtimes. He loves getting into his highchair and enjoys a bunch of little piles of different foods. Food can seriously bring his mood up (or down, if we are not prepared when we're out). He says a few words, but mostly things like "moh" for more, "yah" and "nah". He calls both of his grandmas, "Nana" and calls his sister, "Ah-nah". Reece absolutely loves cows and moos anytime he sees one. He loves looking at books especially any with cows! He pretty much makes us laugh often and loves to snuggle. He's getting those last filler teeth between the front teeth and molars.

Cody and Amber Update:
On Friday night, we hosted a big neighborhood carbo feed to prepare for the Trinidad to Clam Beach Run. Then Saturday, we competed in the race! Cody did the 8 3/4 mi. in just around an hour while Amber did the 5 3/4 mi. in 1 hour and 5 minutes. It was a lot of fun and we both really pushed ourselves in the race. The highlight was the river crossing complete with rope! There was actually quite a bit of water to cross! The last 2 1/2 miles was on the beach which was pretty hard. We spent the rest of the weekend recovering, but I think we are both feeling good now!

Happy New Year!!

We all survived New Year's this year! Fortunately, our neighbors and great friends, hosted their annual party so we didn't have to go far! Reece stayed with Grandma Rajean at our house and Alauna stayed the night at Papa and Barbie Grandma's (her first time ever!) Both kids did great and thankfully slept in until after 9am the next morning.
We ended the year with lots of great memories. At the beginning of December, we went on a weekend trip to Shelter Cove with 3 other families. We rented a huge beach house and had really nice weather. Then a few weekends later, we took a day-trip up to the snow with our buddies and the kids played in the snow. Alauna loved sledding, but Reece pretty much preferred the car! The kids were also a lot of fun on Christmas. Both were very excited and happily opened their presents!

Alauna Update:
Alauna is still very into Barbies and we gave her a Barbie doll house for Christmas. We had to put the thing together the night before and were both in shock when we opened up the box and saw a ton of wooden pieces. It finally came together almost an hour later... Alauna's birthday is coming up next month and surprise...Barbie theme!
Alauna is doing great in school. Her teachers are very happy with her progress and she is very happy there. She was actually bummed she was being picked up last week. Alauna has also been practicing on a big girl bike over the past weeks. It still has training wheels, but she looks like such a big girl on a real 2 wheeled bike. She's growing up so fast and actually went up a full-shoe size in only a few short months!

Reece Update:
Reece has become quite a little talker over the past few months. He responds with "yeah" or "nah" when asked a question. He also recognizes cows and says"moooo-mooo". His favorite thing is the kitchen we bought for Alauna a few Christmas's ago. He plays with it all the time and brings us food. With our wet weather, we've been inside a ton, but when there are breaks, he heads outside. Reece loves the dirt! We bought him a really cool self-powered push truck for Christmas and he pushes it all over the house. Reece is a very silly little guy and climbs on everything!

Cody and Amber Update:
Our latest addiction is Wii Guitar Hero which comes complete with realistic guitars and microphone. Both of us are hooked and love playing! We pretty much have a band now and we'll keep you posted if we are playing anywhere close by...kidding, of course.

We enjoyed all of the wonderful Christmas cards this year! May you all have a great 2009 and we'll continue to keep in touch!
Love,
The Thompson Family
